9/15 - Progress Report #2 Posted in Skyward

Parents and Students of the Senior Class of 2022:

Congratulations on achieving senior status! We look forward to working with your student(s) as decisions are made about his/her post high school plans. With all that needs to be done, the fall tasks may feel daunting; however, we strongly believe that this process empowers students and help them develop a better sense of what the future holds and the expectations they are capable of meeting. We sincerely hope that you will be strong support for your daughter or son throughout the year.

In addition, we want to invite you to our Mandatory Annual Senior Parent Meeting on the evening of Friday, September 10th from 5:00-6:00 PM on the Yes Prep West Campus. We ask that you please arrive on time. Counselors will provide you with an overview of the college application process, important dates, and academic requirements for graduation. We are excited to start this year with your student and look forward to seeing you there!

If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to Ms. Brown (832) 646-5227 or email brianna.brown@yesprep.org

**Due to precautions related to Covid19, we are STRONGLY suggesting all parents and students wear a mask for the duration of this meeting.

UPDATE - Back to School Bash:

Due to precautions related to Covid 19, Yes Prep West will postpone the Back to School Bash until further notice. We will announce on Social Media and in Family Notes when we have determined a new date.

We are Still Accepting Applications for 6th Grade!

Do you have a 6th grade student or know of a family who does? West still has spots available for enrollment in 6th grade. Visit this site for more information and to submit an application.

Dress Code Reminders:

As a reminder, students may not wear jeans with rips or holes. Additionally, students may not wear cropped shirts that show midriff/tummy. Please review the student dress code below for a full list of acceptable and not acceptable clothing that may be worn at school. Parents will be called to bring new clothes for students who are in violation of the dress code.

Social Media:

Please follow Yes Prep West on Instagram (@yesprepwestmarvels) and on Facebook (Yes Prep West Secondary). We post important information, updates, and happenings around campus!

Dismissal:

We would like to remind all families that you are NOT allowed to park or wait for your students at neighboring businesses of YES Prep West during dismissal. This includes businesses on either side of the campus and/or across the street.

These businesses are not school property and business owners reserve the right to request that you leave their premises immediately. In some cases, you may be issued a ticket for failure to comply with this request.

Additional dismissal reminders:

·       School ends at 4pm and all students must be picked up by 4:30 pm.

·       Upon leaving the YES Prep West parking lot, all cars must turn RIGHT on Harwin Drive.

Thank you for your help in ensuring a safe and smooth dismissal.

Attendance and Dismissal:

We have seen that a high number of students are being picked up early from school. This means students are missing important class time and are risking falling behind in those courses.

We ask that families take advantage of holidays to schedule any appointments.

If you pick up your student early for an appointment, you MUST provide proper documentation. If not, that absence will be marked as UNEXCUSED in your student's record.

Students may not be picked up early from school after 3:30pm.

If you have any questions, please call the front office at 713-967-8200.

Daily Reminders for Students and Families:

1. Charge laptops each night to ensure they are ready for school the next day.

2. IDs should be worn around students' necks everyday, all day while on campus.

3. Cell phones may only be used in the morning before 8:30am. After that, they should be OFF and out of sight.

4. Students should bring headphones (that have a cord) to school everyday.

Mandatory Tutorials for Select Students

On Monday, several students were sent home with information regarding the Unified Tutorials Program. Please ask your student if they received this form, and sign in the applicable places. This form needs to be returned to school with your student AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. In addition to this letter, if your student is required to attend tutorials, you will also receive an individual phone call from a Yes Prep West staff member regarding this information.

These mandatory tutorials begin after-school the week of October 4th and runs after-school and on Saturdays. Not all students are required to attend tutorials, only those students who receive a letter and a phone call. If you are unsure if your student needs to attend, please call the front office (713)-967-8200.

Students were selected for these tutorials as a result of legislation passed in Texas (House Bill 4545), and are required to attend 30 hours of intervention or tutorials. This is a result of students' 2021 STAAR scores.

Please reference the form sent home with your student for information regarding tutorial subjects, tutorial days and times. Additionally, please answer the 3 questions at the bottom of the form regarding transportation, dinner, and ACE.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent message and please call the front office with any questions regarding tutorials. Again, the form needs to be returned to school with your student as soon as possible.

Student Activity on YES Prep Devices

YES Prep Public Schools believes that holding students to behavioral expectations that increase safety and joy in learning will support their ability to achieve academic success, care for their community, and ultimately increase the number of students from YES Prep who succeed in college or post secondary opportunities. Committing to community expectations ensures a physically and emotionally safe learning environment that embraces the diverse communities, cultures, and identities of our students. We believe it is the responsibility of YES Prep staff to build community agreements and teach non-cognitive social skills in order to help students feel safe, seen, and empowered.

The YES Prep Student Code of Conduct outlines the behavioral expectations of students and the consequences administered for specific acts of misconduct. Disciplinary action shall draw on the professional judgement of the administrators, the seriousness of the offense, and the requirement listed in the YES Prep Student Code of Conduct. Actions of misconduct may result in suspension up to three days per occurrence or a recommendation for a disciplinary hearing, which could result placement at a disciplinary alternative program (DAEP) or expelled. All behavior on campus site or through school electronic communication system including the district internet and Microsoft Teams platform are subjected to the YES Prep Code of Conduct.

We share this reminder as it has been brought to our attention that students are engaging in inappropriate behaviors (e.g., accessing social media and other non-YES Prep sites, virtual jokes, pranks, etc.) using these platforms. YES Prep students are expected to behave in a manner that promotes care for all individuals, contributes to a safe environment for students, and provide an educational environment free of disruption. As such, please remember that YES Prep issued laptops, devices, internet, and Microsoft Teams should be used only for school approved activities, classes, and purposes. Additionally, these devices and platforms are frequently reviewed and monitored by YES Prep Public Schools.

Please be advised that any students who are not adhering to these expectations outlined in the YES Prep Student Handbook will be held to the consequences outlined in the Code of Conduct. It should be noted that, depending on the egregiousness of the conduct, authorities may be called. Moving forward, all students are expected to use these devices and platforms appropriately.

Thank you so much for your cooperation and time. We appreciate your involvement in helping students understand how their actions have impact on other people. We know that your support will help our students continue to grow and become more successful. For additional recommendations, please review the tips below.

Recommendations for Families:

· Talk with your student about setting boundaries and what is/ is not appropriate for Microsoft Teams or YES Prep Devices.

· Monitor your student’s activity. If possible, work alongside your student and familiarize yourself with how your student is using technology.

· Review your student’s activity. Review any messages, assignments, internet history, or other activities that your student is completing at the beginning or end of each day.

· Talk with your students about safe technology and internet use beyond YES Prep platforms. This includes social media best-practices, privacy and location settings, and the sharing of personal information. For more information visit https://crime-stoppers.org/cyber-safety/

Schoology:

Schoology is the platform students will use in all of their classes to learn and complete assignments this school year. Families will access Schoology using the same email that is used with Skyward. Please watch this video for more information on accessing Schoology!
